About Price Flanagan’s Substack

Reading is a big investment of your time. I do not take your investment of time lightly, nor do I assume that because this publication is currently free to read, my burden of proof as a writer is lower.

My goal is to make every piece worth your while. Of course, some will have more appeal than others. Through my essays, I hope you will meet a human who writes something that sends a vibration into your mind and your bones—like a neurologist’s tuning fork.

What You Will Find Here

This foyer is an entry point to two distinct creative writing portals:

  • Two Years a Vampire: A deeply personal and human account of surviving a complicated cancer illness. I hope to be your guide through this hard road. I want to share with you how the sparks flew from a collision of the ire and the beauty embedded in my spirit.

  • Hidden Register: A humorous, sharp, and often digressive journal of life’s absurdities and ironies. Hidden Register is like a circus tent in which sits a balky kid holding up his small fist at all that life will toss at him. The kid is always learning, always growing up—registering his joys, griefs, foibles, and faults.

Hidden Register A Puzzle

I am a writer in my mid-60s, married for almost 36 years, and by many accounts, a fool who suffers no fools. The poet Richard Wilbur called one of his most beloved poems, “Love Calls Us to the Things of This World.” I agree. I seek an interplay between the two wings of my writing—or, to mix metaphors, I get jazzed by a call-and-response format. I might veer into a poem or a story as well.

This place is my way of heeding that call. Ultimately, I find this project a matter of life and death. Life first. Death last. It goes without saying.

While my primary motivation is the heartfelt purpose found in the act of writing, all writers want to be read, and I hear that a paid subscription or two bumps a writer’s work onto the Substack leaderboard.

Soon I will add a paid subscription option. Treat it like an old coffee can tip jar. But you know the kind of tip jar that exists because an employer does not pay its people a living wage? That is not my type of tip jar. My motivation is meaning-making and cultivating a community.

And that said, if you choose to send some moolah my way via a Substack contribution, I will keep a little back for my troubles and send the rest to a charity, specifically the Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma Foundation (CTCL).

If you are moved to do so, please consider sending a monetary shoutout directly to the CTCL Foundation. It has been a source of great help and comfort to me.

Thanks for reading Two Years a Vampire & Hidden Register.

In 2019 oncologists diagnosed my T-Cell Lymphoma. Two years later, a nurse set an intravenous drip that changed things, including my relationship to the sun. I became a pale chimera with another man's T-Cells in me, but that is not all.
